Dear Mothering,
Not because I am to miss out on the remainder of my pre-paid subscription, but because Mothering is no longer in print.
Each issue is such a rare and beautiful gem of information, celebration, support, community. I have been inspired by it since I was a girl (I used to read my mother’s copies, back in the 80’s and 90’s) and I can attest to the fact that it influenced me positively in countless ways. As soon as I found out I was pregnant with my first child, over four years ago, the first thing I did was run out and order my own subscription. I have never thrown out a single copy, and I’m so glad I saved them. Each issue was a great resource that I return to again and again. I feel so grateful that this publication ever existed, and I feel privileged to have benefited from the wisdom within its pages for so long.
Rather than feeling slighted right now, I have to say that I am filled with regret that I didn’t order gift subscriptions for all my expecting friends when I still had a chance. I can’t imagine a better value: $30 for a priceless gift that keeps on giving through the years, even if only in the form of dusty old dogeared copies! A true treasure.
Thank you, Mothering.
Love,
Leigh

Oh nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard. I have a pit in my stomach...I have treasured each and every issue (and saved them too). Online just isn't the same. So sad that every single magazine I enjoy has folded. :-(
I see now that they aren't switching over to an online magazine, but will be stopping altogether after just a couple of months?! I am so heartsick. BLAH.
ReplyDeletethat sucks. i don't have children (yet) but i flip through this mag sometimes anyway. i can see why you like it so much!
ReplyDeleteI still have all those old copies. WHEW!
ReplyDeleteVery sorry to hear this news.
Ugh. I am so heartbroken. This is seriously the only magazine I subscribe to, and I always look forward to reading it cover to cover.
ReplyDeleteI'm upset. I honestly feel it's a loss to the parenting world. You will be missed, Mothering!
ReplyDeleteA very sad day, indeed!
ReplyDeleteI still have all my old copies too. That says a LOT!!!
It's the end of the magazine that influenced me and changed my life. I met a group of women through the Mothering online boards about 9 years ago that are still dear to me. Mothering magazine was my hippie aunt's magazine! The one that influenced ME to be a 'hippie' mommy. Ah.
ReplyDeleteLeigh, you are handling this much more gracefully than I.
ReplyDeleteI am a new mama and I don't feel like I got enough good information yet. It is my favorite publication, and I feel slighted about not reading the wonderful and inspiring stories. Quite honestly hearing about other women like me has changed my life, and no doubt changed my child's. Through Mothering mag I found a safe place. Although their online boards will still remain, it cannot compare to the wonderfulness of curling up with a cup of tea and soaking up the stories and insight like a sponge. I wish I could afford to order back copies!
Sad sad sad. I am heartbroken.
I am shocked and saddened! I am a subscriber but have not received any of this information. As much as I love the web there is no replacement for a tactile read! Especially one so dear to my heart and applicable to my life. They always send me the online edition before the print and I force myself to hold off reading until I get my copy! So sad.
ReplyDeleteWhat? WHAT???? I hadn't heard. Don't want to believe it. Going off to read your link now.
ReplyDeletep.s. i actually feel sick now. and you know what, i had actually just ordered a gift subscription for friends :(
ReplyDeletemy heart hurts! such a loss!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAh, that IS sad. Mothering Magazine is the only parenting magazine that I know of that isn't full of consumerism (and terrible parenting advice). ;)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they will continue to expand their online presence in place of a traditional publication?
