Frank on Breastfeeding

Mary and Pablo, Feb, 1952. Robert Frank.
Silver print, 11 x 14 inches

"Portraits include...most compellingly...Frank's wife Mary reclining with their infant son, Pablo. With one breast bare and ready to nurse, she stares at the viewer through piercing pale eyes, providing an intimate glimpse of Frank's own American life."

Excerpted from a review of a 2009 show of Frank's work at the
Robert Mann Gallery,

  1. This may be one of my favorite portraits yet. Very simple and artistic and flattering. I love that you share the beauty in breastfeeding!

  2. Really like your blog.
Though it was a long time before I got to it, I finally posted a few memories of breastfeeding (which was more pumping, but my baby girl got the milk).
